Werder Bremen have openly admitted that their loan signing of Nigerian forward Victor Boniface has not gone as planned. Sporting director Clemens Fritz acknowledged that the striker, brought in to boost Bremen’s attack, has struggled to make an impact largely due to fitness issues.

Injuries Disrupt Plans

Boniface was expected to add physicality and dynamism to Bremen’s frontline, but recurring injuries have kept him from reaching full match sharpness. So far, he has made just 11 Bundesliga appearances, mostly from the bench, contributing two assists but failing to score. His limited availability has left Bremen without the attacking edge they had anticipated, exposing gaps in the team’s forward options.

Club Admits Misjudgment

Fritz admitted the club’s strategy has not delivered the desired results. “We said we wanted to be bold. We wanted to rely on young players. And certainly not everything went according to plan. We can’t absolve ourselves of making mistakes,” he said.

He continued: “On the one hand, we wanted to develop Keke, and on the other hand, we also wanted to acquire the quality that Victor undoubtedly possesses. As things stand now, we have to say that it hasn’t worked out in that form. We wanted to take a manageable financial risk and have the courage to see the opportunity.”

What’s Next for Boniface?

With fitness concerns continuing to limit his contributions, Boniface is unlikely to play a major role for the rest of the season. A potential extension of his loan or a permanent move now appears doubtful, leaving Bremen to rethink their attacking options as they aim to turn their ambitions into results on the pitch.
