The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed a major shake‑up in Africa’s biggest football event — the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will expand from 24 to 28 teams in future tournaments.
🆕 More Teams, More Opportunities
CAF President Patrice Motsepe revealed the expansion following an executive committee meeting in Cairo, Egypt — a move aimed at making the tournament more inclusive and giving more African nations the chance to compete on the sport’s biggest stage on the continent.
This builds on the format change made in 2019, when the tournament was increased from 16 to 24 teams.
📅 What’s Next for AFCON?
While CAF didn’t confirm exactly when the 28‑team format will start, the federation did reassure fans that the 2027 AFCON — set to be co‑hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda — will go ahead as planned under the expanded plan.
In addition:
✨ Another AFCON tournament is already scheduled for 2028, after which the competition will shift to a four‑year cycle — similar to the FIFA World Cup format.
✨ CAF is also launching a Nations League‑style competition starting in 2029, with annual matches culminating in a 16‑team final held every two years.
⚽ Why the Change?
Motsepe explained that CAF wants to make African football more predictable, competitive, and better organised. He also highlighted the need to develop the sport in underrepresented regions, especially East Africa a region with massive untapped potential.

For many fans, this is exciting news. More teams mean more nations get a shot at AFCON glory, and more memorable moments for African football lovers everywhere.
