In a major development at the nation’s legislature, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday officially declared three seats in the 10th Senate vacant following the deaths of serving lawmakers. The move marks the beginning of a midterm reshuffle that will lead to fresh elections in the affected districts.
Vacancies Triggered by Tragedy
During plenary, Akpabio said the action was necessitated by the tragic loss of three senators, urging that democratic processes must continue even in the face of sorrow. The seats now open for contest are:
- Enugu North Senatorial District
- Nasarawa North Senatorial District
- Rivers South‑East Senatorial District
He made it clear that this declaration aligns with the provisions of the Constitution, which requires vacant positions to be filled through elections.
By‑Elections to Follow
In accordance with constitutional timelines, Akpabio directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organise by‑elections in the three districts. The commission is expected to conduct these polls within approximately 30 days of the declaration to ensure the affected states regain representation in the upper legislative chamber.
“Due to the tragedies that have befallen the 10th Senate, vacancies have been created for midterm elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that we fill the seats left vacant by the demise of our colleagues,” Akpabio said.
Political Stakes and What’s Next
With by‑elections looming, political parties are already preparing to field candidates, setting the stage for a crucial test of public support mid‑term. Analysts believe the outcome could influence the balance of power in the Senate, especially as lawmakers navigate the final stretch before the 2027 general elections.
Citizens in the affected districts will soon head to the polls to choose new representatives, a process that will not only honour constitutional requirements but also reaffirm democratic participation after a period marked by loss and change.
