Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has lauded the impressive performances of new faces Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu after Nigeria secured a 2-1 friendly victory over Iran in Antalya, Turkey.

Moses Simon and Akor Adams gave the Super Eagles an early lead in the first half, while Mehdi Taremi pulled one back for Iran midway through the second half. Fernandez replaced Semi Ajayi at halftime, while Nwaiwu, who was a late call-up following Calvin Bassey’s withdrawal, came on in the 57th minute.

Iwobi highlighted their composure and contribution:

“Shout out to the two centre-backs (Fernandez and Nwaiwu) that played the second half, making their debuts. They did well, they did solid. The main thing is that we won, that gives us a confidence boost,” he said on the Alexander Yaa Digg podcast.

Reflecting on the Red Card

The Fulham star also addressed his red card during Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Jordan on March 31. He was sent off after reacting to a challenge by Jordan midfielder Amer Jamous late in the game.

“Obviously, I need to address what I did and apologise to all my Nigeria teammates, staff, and everyone who cares about Nigeria. My actions were not good enough, and I got sent off. But I have to learn and move on. We got a draw, we didn’t lose the game, so we have to take the positives,” Iwobi added.

Building Team Confidence Ahead of Key Fixtures

Iwobi’s statements underscore the importance of blending youth with experience in the Super Eagles squad. With almost 100 caps for Nigeria, the midfielder continues to set an example both on and off the pitch, showing leadership while encouraging emerging talents.

Fans and pundits alike have applauded his humility and mentorship, with many praising the seamless integration of debutants who are now seen as potential key players in upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifiers and other major fixtures.
