Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has stirred fresh political conversations after declaring that she would strongly oppose Peter Obi if he ever seeks a second term in office.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News Prime Time, Yesufu stressed that leadership must be built on integrity, noting that Obi had repeatedly promised to serve only one term if elected president.

According to her, this was not a casual statement but a commitment she personally verified before the 2023 election.

She explained that she directly asked Obi to reaffirm his position, making it clear she was putting her own credibility on the line by defending him publicly.

“If he decides to go beyond one term, I will oppose him with everything in me,” she said.

Yesufu maintained that keeping one’s word is non-negotiable in leadership, adding that any attempt to go back on such a promise would be unacceptable.

However, she also expressed confidence in Obi’s character, describing him as someone she believes will stand by his word.

Her statement has since sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians applauding her stance on accountability, while others argue that circumstances in office could influence such decisions.

The conversation now raises a bigger question about trust in leadership and whether campaign promises should remain binding regardless of future realities.

Should Nigerian politicians be held strictly accountable for campaign promises like a one-term pledge, or is it acceptable for leaders to change their stance once in power?
