
Eight persons have been confirmed dead following a late-night attack by armed gunmen in Mbwelle village, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attackers were said to have stormed the community around 11 p.m. on Thursday, opening fire on residents in a violent assault that lasted close to an hour.
Reports indicate that the victims were all members of the same family, making the incident even more devastating for the community.
At least three other residents sustained injuries during the attack, while several persons are still unaccounted for.
Those confirmed dead include Elder Iliya Mangut Dakus, Luck Titus Dakus, Habila Istifanu Dakus, Hassan Istifanus Dakus, Hassan Moses Dakus, Biggie Lucky Dakus, Sunday Gideon Dakus, and Innocent Barnabas Makwin.
The Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Samuel Amalau, described the incident as heartbreaking and strongly condemned what he called a renewed wave of unprovoked attacks in the area.
He extended condolences to the bereaved families, describing the killings as a “direct assault on peaceful coexistence” in the community.
Security agencies have been commended for their response efforts, while residents have been urged to remain vigilant and provide timely information that could help prevent further attacks.
The Plateau State Police Command also confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured that updates will be provided as more details emerge.
Meanwhile, tension remains high in the area, as community leaders and residents continue to express concern over repeated attacks and alleged slow security response.
