A Nigerian man has sparked widespread reactions online after suggesting that members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) could be deployed to help defend Abuja amid growing security concerns.
The suggestion comes shortly after reports of the United States Embassy in Abuja temporarily closing operations due to security-related concerns, which has further intensified public discussions around safety in the Federal Capital Territory.
The man, identified as Martin Beck Nworah on Facebook, made the suggestion in a post that quickly began circulating online.
According to him, corps members already serving in Abuja should be the first considered for such a role, before extending it to those posted in other major cities like Lagos and Port Harcourt.
He, however, noted that corps members serving in rural areas—especially those attached to schools—should be excluded from any such arrangement.
In his words:
“Start with those serving in Abuja and then deploy other serving in Lagos, Port Harcourt and all the state capitals. Leave those serving and teaching in schools in the villages.”
His statement has since generated mixed reactions online, with many questioning the practicality and safety implications of involving NYSC members in security operations, while others argue it reflects the level of concern about Nigeria’s current security situation.
It would be recalled that the US Embassy in Abuja recently adjusted its operations due to potential security risks, advising affected applicants to await rescheduled appointments.
The development has continued to fuel conversations about safety, governance, and emergency preparedness in the capital city.
