A disturbing incident has thrown families into panic after gunmen abducted several candidates travelling for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Benue State.
The attack reportedly occurred on the evening of April 15 along the Otukpo route, when a commercial vehicle belonging to Benue Links was ambushed by suspected kidnappers. The passengers, mostly young students heading to write their exams, were robbed before being taken into the bush.
While initial reports suggested that about 17 candidates were abducted, the Benue State Commissioner of Police confirmed that 14 passengers were kidnapped, with one person managing to escape.
According to eyewitness accounts, the bus had roughly 18 occupants before the attack. The driver and one passenger reportedly escaped the scene, while others were taken by the assailants.
The incident has also raised questions about safety compliance, as the driver allegedly violated the transport company’s policy against night travel. Authorities confirmed that he has been taken into custody and is currently under investigation.
Security operatives have since launched a rescue operation, with officials saying efforts are ongoing to locate and safely return the victims.
The shocking development has sparked widespread concern across the country, especially as it involves students pursuing their education. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to express fears over rising insecurity and the risks faced by young people.
