Xavi Simons will miss the rest of the season and this summer’s World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Tottenham Hotspur.
The 23-year-old midfielder was stretchered off during Spurs’ 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers following a heavy collision with defender Hugo Bueno. Early reports suggest a possible anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, although full medical confirmation is still pending.
Simons reacts to heartbreaking news
The Dutch star later confirmed the setback in an emotional message, admitting the injury has brought his season to an abrupt end.
“They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way,” he said.
“My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken.”
He also revealed that the injury has cost him a place at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
“All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team… and now that’s been taken away from me, along with the World Cup.”
Major setback for club and country
The timing of the injury is a huge blow for Tottenham, who are currently fighting to avoid relegation. Sitting 18th on the table and just two points away from safety, the club now faces a difficult run-in without one of their key players.
Simons has been an important part of their attacking play, and his absence could have a serious impact on their survival chances.
For the Netherlands, it’s another big loss ahead of the World Cup, where he was expected to play a major role in midfield.
Focus now on recovery
Despite the disappointment, Simons remains hopeful about the future and has promised to come back stronger.
For now, attention shifts to his recovery process, which could be lengthy if the ACL injury is confirmed.
It’s a tough moment for the young star, but one he’ll now have to overcome as he begins the road back to full fitness.
