The Osun State Government has officially removed the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu in Ife North Local Government Area following his conviction and imprisonment in the United States over COVID-19-related fraud.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment.
Government confirms immediate removal
According to the statement, the removal takes immediate effect after consultations, legal review, and approval by the Osun State Executive Council.
The government said the action was taken in line with the Osun State Chiefs Law and other legal provisions guiding traditional institutions in the state.
Monarch reportedly jailed in the United States
Reports indicate that the traditional ruler was convicted in the United States over a COVID-19 fraud case and is currently serving a prison sentence abroad.
The development reportedly raised concerns among stakeholders about the image and integrity of the traditional institution in Osun State.
Staff of office withdrawn
Following the decision, the state government confirmed that all instruments of authority earlier issued to the monarch have been withdrawn.
The stool of the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu has also been declared vacant.

The government stated that the process for selecting a new monarch will follow established traditional customs and legal procedures.
