The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of officers linked to the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

The decision follows the outcome of an internal review by the Force Disciplinary Committee, which investigated the viral incident that triggered nationwide outrage.

“Officer acted outside police rules” — Police confirm

According to the Delta State Police Command spokesperson, Bright Edafe, the officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in clear violation of operational procedures during the incident.

He said the matter had already been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary and criminal proceedings.

The Command also explained that the officer allegedly fired his weapon during an operation based on intelligence that the suspect was attempting to move a parcel said to contain a firearm.

However, the action was described as a breach of Force Order 237 and standard policing guidelines.

IGP: “No officer is above the law”

The IGP confirmed that ASP Usman, along with other members of his team found culpable, will be dismissed from service and handed over for prosecution.

“Upon dismissal, they will face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” he stated.

He added that the Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for extrajudicial killings, stressing that no uniform gives anyone the right to take a life unlawfully.

The police leadership also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring that justice will be fully pursued.

They urged the public to remain calm while the legal process takes its course.
