A Nigerian woman has sparked conversations online after expressing frustration over the celebration of Children’s Day amid growing insecurity and recurring cases of school abductions across the country.
In a video shared on TikTok, the visibly emotional lady questioned what exactly Nigerians are celebrating, arguing that children no longer feel safe even in schools — places traditionally regarded as secure environments for learning and growth.
Speaking in the video, she said:
“Today is supposed to be Children’s Day, but what is happy about Children’s Day in Nigeria? School is supposed to be the safest place for children, but children now go to school in fear.”
She referenced recent abduction incidents in the Oriire community of Oyo State, noting that similar attacks have occurred repeatedly over the years, with some victims still yet to reunite with their families.
The lady also criticized the government’s handling of insecurity, lamenting that many parents are left living in fear while authorities appear unable to adequately protect children and communities.
“We live in a failed country and the president is gallivanting up and down. As a country, we have failed our children,” she added.
Her remarks have since generated mixed reactions on social media. While many Nigerians agreed with her concerns about worsening insecurity and the safety of schoolchildren, others debated the tone and intensity of her criticism.
