A man has sparked widespread debate online after claiming that his wife of 21 years asked for a divorce just two weeks after he completed treatment for cancer.

The story, which was originally shared on a relationship forum before spreading across social media, has reignited conversations about commitment, caregiving, and the challenges couples face when serious illness enters a marriage.

Divorce request follows cancer recovery

According to the man, the marriage began to unravel shortly after he overcame a lengthy battle with cancer and started rebuilding his life following months of treatment.

He alleged that his wife informed him she no longer wished to remain in the marriage because she did not want the long-term responsibilities that could come with caring for a partner who had experienced a major health crisis.

“My wife asked for a divorce two weeks after I beat cancer. Her exact words were: ‘I didn’t sign up to be someone’s caretaker forever,’” he recounted.

The statement, he said, left him shocked and questioning the strength of a relationship that had lasted more than two decades and weathered numerous challenges over the years.

Quiet preparations during treatment

The man further revealed that while undergoing treatment, he had taken steps to organise his financial affairs and seek legal advice about his future.

According to him, those decisions were made privately and without his wife’s knowledge.

“What she didn’t know was that during treatment, I quietly changed my will, separated my finances, and documented every asset we owned. So while she was planning her new life, my lawyer was preparing mine,” he said.

Finding closure after separation

Despite the emotional toll of the experience, the man claimed he ultimately found peace following the end of the marriage.

Rather than feeling anger or resentment, he said the divorce provided clarity and revealed realities about the relationship that he may not have previously recognised.

He described the finalisation of the divorce as a moment of relief rather than bitterness.

Online reactions and broader debate

The story has generated strong reactions across social media, with users expressing differing opinions on the responsibilities spouses owe one another during times of illness and adversity.

Many argued that marriage involves supporting a partner through difficult circumstances, including serious health challenges, while others pointed to the emotional, financial, and psychological strain that long-term caregiving can place on relationships.

The discussion echoes similar debates seen in recent years regarding commitment, personal wellbeing, and the expectations that accompany long-term marriage.

As reactions continue to pour in, the account has become another focal point in ongoing conversations about loyalty, caregiving, and the meaning of partnership during life’s most difficult moments.
