Early Beginnings

Bryson launched his professional music career at just 14 years old as a backup singer for a local Greenville band, Al Freeman and the Upsetters.

Because bandleader Al Freeman had difficulty pronouncing his birth name, “Peapo,” he began using the stage name Peabo, which remained with him throughout his career.

At age 16, he left South Carolina to tour the famous Chitlin’ Circuit with Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display, gaining valuable experience as a performer.

His major breakthrough came during a recording session at Atlanta-based Bang Records, where executive Eddie Biscoe recognized his songwriting and vocal talent. Biscoe subsequently signed Bryson as a songwriter, arranger, and producer before encouraging him to pursue a solo career.
