Early Life and Education
Kola Oyewo was born on March 27, 1946, in Oba Ile, a town in Osun State, southwestern Nigeria.
Driven by a passion for culture and the performing arts, he pursued formal training at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he obtained a Diploma in Dramatic Arts and a Certificate in Yoruba Oral Literature. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Theatre Arts in 1995.
Determined to deepen his academic knowledge, Oyewo proceeded to University of Ibadan, where he obtained both a Master of Arts (M.A.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Drama.
Career
Kola Oyewo began his professional acting career in 1964 when he joined the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group.
His first role was Adejare in Orogun Adedigba, a production based on Oyin Adejobi’s autobiography. His outstanding performances quickly established him as one of the most promising talents in Yoruba theatre.
After spending nine years with the theatre group, Oyewo joined the University of Ife Theatre, where he worked closely with celebrated playwright and scholar Ola Rotimi.
One of his most memorable stage performances was his portrayal of Odewale in Rotimi’s acclaimed play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that remains one of the defining moments of his career.

Kola Oyewo married his first wife in 1967, and the union produced five sons, although one sadly passed away.
Following the death of his first wife, he remarried in 1980. His second wife passed away on October 10, 2020. In later interviews, Oyewo revealed that he had no plans to remarry.
Outside acting and academia, he had a deep appreciation for music and often spoke about his admiration for legendary Nigerian musicians, including Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Orlando Owoh, and Sikiru Ayinde Barrister.
He also credited his father, Bamgbola Oyewo, an Egungun masquerade performer, for teaching him patience and discipline—qualities that shaped both his personal and professional life.
