“Why Elections Are Rigged in Nigeria” — Peter Obi Speaks on Vote Protection and Civic Responsibility

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has shared his views on why elections in Nigeria are often surrounded by allegations of rigging, stressing that citizens also have a major role to play in protecting their votes.

Speaking during a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Obi argued that electoral outcomes are not determined by politicians alone, but also by the level of vigilance shown by voters during and after elections.

“Elections are rigged in Nigeria because Nigerians want it to be rigged. I will do whatever is possible to protect votes come 2027 election, but it is now left for Nigerians to decide if their votes will count,” he said.

Call for Voter Vigilance

The former Anambra State governor emphasized the importance of citizens staying at their polling units after casting their votes, instead of leaving immediately.

According to him, this simple act of vigilance can significantly reduce opportunities for manipulation during the collation process.

“Because if you vote and stay in your polling unit and insist your votes must count, it will be counted. But some Nigerians would rather vote and go home, then hours later go to night vigil to start praying, because they think they are the only ones God created,” he added.

Shared Responsibility in Elections

Obi further stressed that protecting the integrity of elections should not be left solely to political actors or electoral bodies. Instead, he said citizens must take active responsibility for safeguarding the democratic process.

He noted that sustained civic engagement is essential for ensuring credible elections and strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

Leadership and National Challenges

The politician also reiterated his belief that Nigeria’s biggest challenge remains leadership, arguing that meaningful progress will only be achieved when citizens become more actively involved in shaping and defending the democratic process.
