Peter Obi Vows to Tackle Insecurity Head-On, Says Nigeria Must Reclaim Control from Criminals
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has vowed to take decisive action against insecurity if elected president, insisting that the Nigerian state must reclaim full control from criminal groups operating across the country.
Obi made the remarks during an interview with broadcaster Rufai Oseni, where he addressed concerns over the continued abduction of schoolchildren, teachers, and other victims of kidnapping.
Responding to a question about what he would do differently as president, the former Anambra State governor argued that no country can function effectively when criminal elements challenge the authority of the government.
‘One Person Must Be in Charge’
According to Obi, the government must demonstrate clear leadership and resolve in confronting insecurity.
“If I am President today, it is either the terrorists are in charge of the country or I am in charge. One person must be in charge, or we declare war on insecurity,” he said.
The former governor stressed that restoring security would be one of his top priorities, noting that effective governance cannot thrive in an environment where citizens live in fear.
Points to Record as Anambra Governor
Obi also referenced his tenure as governor of Anambra State, claiming that his administration took a firm stance against crime and created conditions that made it difficult for kidnappers and other criminal groups to operate.
“Go and ask about my record when I was Governor. I confronted insecurity head-on. Even notorious kidnappers like Evans and many others could not operate in Anambra and were forced to flee,” he stated.
He argued that leadership requires swift action and a hands-on approach, particularly during periods of national crisis.
‘I Am Ready to Die for Nigeria’
Speaking on his commitment to the country, Obi said he would not hesitate to return home immediately if a major security emergency occurred while he was abroad.
“If I am outside the country and there is a crisis at home, I will return immediately. I am ready to die for Nigeria,” he said.
The former governor also highlighted his long-standing loyalty to Nigeria, revealing that despite spending years abroad, he never considered obtaining citizenship in another country.
“I lived abroad for years, yet I never considered obtaining a foreign passport. I have only one passport—the Nigerian passport,” Obi added.
His comments have since generated reactions online, with supporters praising his strong stance on insecurity, while critics continue to debate the practical steps required to address Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
As insecurity remains one of the country’s most pressing concerns, Obi’s remarks have added to the ongoing national conversation about leadership, accountability, and the urgent need to protect lives and property.
