England manager Thomas Tuchel has suggested that Bukayo Saka may once again begin on the bench when the Three Lions take on Ghana in their second Group L fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Arsenal winger made a strong impact as a substitute in England’s thrilling 4-2 win over Croatia, providing the assist for Marcus Rashford’s late goal shortly after coming onto the pitch.
However, Tuchel appears to be taking a cautious approach with the 24-year-old as he continues to manage a lingering Achilles issue.
Careful Management of Saka’s Fitness
Saka featured throughout Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign despite discomfort, but England’s medical and coaching staff are prioritising his long-term fitness with the knockout stages in mind.
Speaking ahead of the Ghana clash, Tuchel indicated that while the winger is progressing well, he is not yet expected to return to full starting fitness.
“Bukayo is ready and will get more and more ready. I think once we go to the last game of this group he will be ready,” Tuchel said.
Reports suggest that medical assessments have shown no worsening of Saka’s Achilles tendinitis since the end of the club season. However, England remain reluctant to rush him back into a starting role.
Madueke Impressing on the Right Wing
The cautious approach could see Noni Madueke retain his place in the starting XI after an impressive performance in England’s opening match against Croatia.
Madueke’s pace and direct attacking play have given England a strong alternative option on the right flank, allowing Tuchel to ease Saka back into full match fitness.
Ghana Clash Carries High Stakes
England travel to Boston for a crucial Group L encounter against Ghana, who began their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama.
A win for the Three Lions would secure qualification for the Round of 32 with a game to spare, strengthening their position at the top of the group.
While Saka is expected to feature in some capacity against Ghana, Tuchel’s comments suggest he will once again be used as an impact substitute rather than risked from the start as England continue to balance performance with player fitness management.
