Denrele Edun Shares Heartbreaking Final Voice Note from Alexx Ekubo, Reveals Actor Was Still Checking on Others Despite His Own Struggles

Media personality Denrele Edun has paid an emotional tribute to late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, opening up about their final conversation and the painful realization that the actor continued to care for others even while battling challenges of his own.

In a heartfelt post shared on social media, Denrele revealed that he recently listened to the last voice note Alexx sent him—a message recorded while the actor was reportedly on his sick bed.

According to Denrele, what has been most difficult to come to terms with is the fact that Alexx, despite dealing with personal struggles that many people knew nothing about, still found the strength to check on his friends and offer them comfort.

“This is the last voice note Alexx sent me (from his sick bed). And that’s the part I’m struggling with. Because while he was carrying battles I knew nothing about, he still found the strength to reach out and comfort me. That’s who Alexx was,” he wrote.

Reflecting on their long-standing friendship, Denrele recalled meeting Alexx in 2010 while serving as a judge at the Mr Nigeria pageant, where the actor emerged as the first runner-up.

He described the late actor as ambitious, focused, and determined to carve out a successful career in the entertainment industry.

“This ambitious first runner-up came to me determined to be more visible than the winner. Trust Alex… He didn’t just get seen. He became unforgettable,” Denrele said.

The media personality also shared memories from a film project they worked on together in Port Harcourt late last year.

According to him, despite appearing physically frail at the time, Alexx remained his cheerful self, constantly lifting the spirits of those around him. Whenever tensions arose over production challenges, he would step in with jokes and words of encouragement, ensuring everyone felt at ease.

Looking back, Denrele said he now realizes that making others happy was one of Alexx’s greatest gifts.

“After we landed, everyone was expressing frustration over the production logistics. Then Alexx walked over to us—frail looking, but calming everyone down. Cracking jokes. Lifting spirits. Making sure everyone was okay. Looking back now, that was his superpower.”

He also reminisced about the special bond they shared and the affectionate nicknames Alexx had for his friends.

“To the world, I was Denrele. To him, I was ‘Rele.’ On phone calls, I was always ‘Nne.’ Those silly nicknames. Those private jokes. That’s what death steals—not just the person, but the voice that called your name differently from everyone else.”

As Alexx Ekubo was laid to rest, Denrele said he found comfort in imagining the late actor reunited with his longtime friend, the late singer Goldie Harvey.

In a touching tribute, he pictured them together once again, laughing, dancing, and enjoying each other’s company.

“Today, they lay my friend to rest. And somewhere, I choose to believe Goldie has already found him. The music is loud. The laughter is endless. And they’re both dancing ‘Skibobo’ while the rest of us stand here missing them terribly.”

He concluded his tribute by thanking Alexx for his kindness, friendship, and selflessness, noting that the actor always made time to check on others—even when he needed support himself.

The emotional post has resonated deeply with fans, colleagues, and well-wishers, many of whom have described it as a powerful reflection of the warmth, compassion, and generosity that defined Alexx Ekubo’s life.
