The United States Government has issued a security alert to its citizens in Nigeria following rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
Americans residing in or visiting Nigeria have been advised to remain vigilant as military operations continue in the Middle East.
In a statement released on Monday, U.S. authorities urged citizens abroad to exercise heightened caution. The advisory warned of possible travel disruptions, including periodic airspace closures linked to the unfolding crisis.
“Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide — especially in the Middle East — should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the statement read. Citizens were also encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely updates and to follow the Department of State’s official communication channels for further information.
The alert comes amid reports from Iranian media claiming that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in airstrikes allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel. Several other senior Iranian officials were also reported dead.
In response, Iran is said to have launched multiple missiles targeting U.S. bases in Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, pledging retaliation for the reported attacks.
Addressing the developments on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he remained determined to dismantle elements of the Iranian leadership, highlighting the growing strain between the two nations.
As the situation continues to evolve, U.S. citizens in Nigeria and across the Middle East are being urged to stay alert, adhere to official guidance, and closely monitor updates from their nearest embassy or consulate.
