Comedian and filmmaker AY Makun has urged Nigerians to engage in sincere self-reflection over the country’s growing challenges, particularly following the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
In a statement shared on social media, AY expressed concern that individuals whose livelihoods are closely tied to politicians or political structures often struggle to speak honestly about national issues. According to him, financial dependence on political interests can weaken people’s willingness to hold leaders accountable and speak the truth.
The entertainer emphasized that Nigeria’s security and governance problems should not be viewed through political, ethnic, tribal, or religious lenses. Rather, he called on citizens to focus on the broader national interest and embrace their collective responsibility in addressing issues that affect all Nigerians.
His remarks come amid rising public concern over insecurity across parts of the country, including recent reports of kidnappings involving students and teachers in Oyo State.
AY said:
“It’s time we tell ourselves some hard truths. When your source of livelihood depends on politics or politicians, your conscience dies, and speaking the truth becomes your greatest fear. That’s one thing I have noticed among us.
“We need to reflect deeply on the state of the nation and our collective responsibility as Nigerians. Today, we are dealing with issues that affect the country as a whole—not a political party, tribe, or religion.”
