Makinde Says He Is Ready to Sacrifice Himself for Release of Kidnapped Oyo Schoolchildren
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that he would be willing to put his own life on the line if it would help secure the freedom of the pupils and teachers recently abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The governor made the emotional remark on Tuesday while addressing a group of peaceful protesters led by social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, at his residence in Ibadan.
The protest was organised to draw attention to the plight of the kidnapped victims and to urge authorities to intensify efforts to secure their safe release.
Protesters Call for Urgent Action
The demonstration comes amid growing concern over the fate of the abducted children and teachers, whose kidnapping has sparked widespread outrage and public discussion across Oyo State and beyond.
During the meeting, some protesters reportedly expressed a willingness to join rescue operations in a bid to help bring the victims home safely. However, Makinde explained that security agencies were already working with available intelligence and remained focused on ensuring the safe return of the abductees.
Speaking on the matter, the governor said:
“I can sacrifice myself for the release of the abducted children; I am almost 60 years old.”
His comments underscored the seriousness of the situation and his administration’s commitment to securing the victims’ freedom.
Government Confident in Rescue Efforts
Makinde expressed confidence in the ongoing security operations, noting that available information suggests there have been no additional casualties among the abducted victims since the tragic killing of a Mathematics teacher during the incident.
The governor reiterated that his administration is working closely with security agencies and maintained that negotiating with kidnappers is not the preferred approach.
Instead, he stressed the importance of continuing coordinated rescue efforts until all the victims are safely reunited with their families.
VeryDarkMan Pledges Support
Speaking during the protest, VeryDarkMan also voiced his support for ongoing rescue efforts. He stated that he and other concerned young Nigerians were prepared to volunteer and contribute to the fight against kidnapping and insecurity if necessary.
The activist’s involvement has further amplified public attention on the case, with many Nigerians using social media to demand swift action from authorities.
Nigerians React
Makinde’s remarks have since generated significant reactions online, with many Nigerians praising his empathy and concern for the abducted victims.
Others have called for intensified security measures to address the growing threat of kidnapping and ensure the safe return of the children and teachers.
As rescue efforts continue, families of the victims and concerned citizens remain hopeful that the abductees will soon be brought home safely.
