Tiwa Savage just took us behind the scenes of her darkest moments. And her words are hitting hard.
She said whenever online controversies tried to drag her down, she had a safe place to run to — Don Jazzy’s room. Not an office. Not a boardroom. His room.
She would walk in, sit on the floor or on his bed, surrounded by other Mavin artists. They would talk. She would cry if she needed to. And together, they would find a way through.
“I didn’t appreciate it until after I left,” she admitted.
Now signed to a foreign label, she says the warmth is gone. No one checks on her mental health. No one cares about the person behind the streams.
“I can’t go to the Empire office and cry. I miss that part a lot.”
Her message to upcoming artists is clear. Before you sign any deal, ask yourself: Does this label see you as a human or just a product?
Tiwa joined Mavin in 2012 and left in 2019. But even now, she still calls them family.
