Nigeria’s House of Representatives has approved a $516.3 million loan request by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support a major road project.
What the loan is for
The funds, sourced from Deutsche Bank AG, will be used to finance parts of the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway.
The project is expected to improve road connectivity across key regions and make the movement of goods and people faster and easier.
How it was approved
The approval came during plenary in Abuja after lawmakers reviewed a report presented by Abdullahi Rasheed, deputy chairman of the House Committee on Aids, Loans, and Debt Management.
Why the government wants the loan
According to the presidency, the highway is part of a broader plan to boost infrastructure, reduce travel time, and strengthen economic activities across the country.
The request was earlier sent to the National Assembly in line with provisions of the Debt Management Office Act.
What it means
If properly executed, the project could open up new economic opportunities and improve transportation. However, like many loan-backed projects, it may also spark conversations around Nigeria’s growing debt and how effectively such funds are used.
