A group of young women in Asaba have sparked reactions online after complaining about what they describe as a noticeable drop in romantic approaches from men in public spaces.
In a viral video, the ladies expressed frustration over their recent outings, claiming that despite dressing up and looking their best, they received little to no attention.
“Dem no dey toast person again? My makeup don waste,” one of them said.
They compared the situation to previous years when casual outings — especially to places like supermarkets or malls — often came with friendly greetings or even potential romantic interest.
According to them, things have changed.
“We don waka everywhere, nobody even say hi,” another added.
The women linked the shift to the current economic reality in Nigeria, suggesting that financial pressure may be affecting men’s confidence and willingness to approach women.
Many observers online seem to agree with that angle, noting that rising costs of living and financial responsibilities may be making some men more cautious about starting conversations that could lead to spending.
Others, however, argued that the change might not be entirely about money, pointing instead to evolving social norms, online dating, and shifting expectations in modern relationships.
Either way, the conversation has opened up a wider debate about how economic conditions may be quietly reshaping everyday social interactions — including dating.
