A woman has sparked intense debate online after highlighting Nigeria’s rising population despite worsening economic conditions. In a viral video shared on Tuesday, she questioned why family planning is still not taken seriously, even as millions of children are born across the country every year.
She said:
“7.7 million, that’s how many children were born in Nigeria in 2025. That’s over 16,000 births every single day, more than the entire Europe. Yet with rising hunger, poverty, unemployment and insecurity, it’s clear Nigeria still isn’t taking birth control seriously. We keep bringing children into a system that cannot properly take care of the ones already here. Until we begin to talk honestly about family planning, nothing will change.”
Her remarks highlight the pressure faced by families who are struggling to feed, educate, and provide for their children while population growth continues unabated.
Experts have long warned about Nigeria’s rapid population expansion. Organisations like the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report that Nigeria consistently ranks among the countries with the highest annual birth rates worldwide.
