President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in partnership with the Oyo State Government as part of efforts to strengthen security and combat criminal activities in vulnerable communities across the state.
The approval follows the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State by suspected kidnappers.
Federal Government steps up rescue efforts
In a statement issued on Sunday, President Tinubu disclosed that he has directed the immediate deployment of a specialised security unit equipped with advanced rescue capabilities to support ongoing efforts aimed at securing the safe release of the abducted victims.
The President said security agencies have been instructed to intensify intelligence gathering and maintain sustained operations to ensure the successful rescue of the pupils and teachers.
According to him, the government will pursue a carefully coordinated strategy that combines both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to maximise the chances of a safe outcome.
“Our rescue efforts will be intelligence-led, careful, coordinated and sustained. We will deploy every lawful tool available, both kinetic and non-kinetic, to ensure our children and teachers are safely returned home,” Tinubu stated.
Request for military base under consideration
The President also revealed that the Federal Government is giving urgent attention to calls from residents for the establishment of a military base in the affected area.
The proposed base is expected to strengthen security operations, improve rapid response capabilities, and help prevent future attacks on schools and surrounding communities.
Tinubu described the abduction as a tragic incident that should never have occurred, while expressing solidarity with the affected families.
“I share the pain and anxiety of the affected families. No child should be taken from the safety of a classroom. No parent should have to endure this anguish,” he said.
Recruitment of 1,000 forest guards approved
As part of broader efforts to improve security across Oyo State, the President approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards who will work in collaboration with state authorities to secure forests and rural communities often targeted by criminal groups.
The initiative is expected to enhance surveillance, intelligence gathering and security presence in areas considered vulnerable to banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.
Condolences to family of slain teacher
President Tinubu also extended his condolences to the family of the school teacher who lost his life during the attack.
He specifically sympathised with Mrs Mary Oyedokun, the deceased teacher’s wife, and other members of the family, assuring them that the nation would honour his sacrifice.
“I extend my deepest condolences to Mrs Mary Oyedokun, the wife of the late school teacher, and her family. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, and his family will not be abandoned,” the President added.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to restoring security in the area and ensuring that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
