A Fulani man has sparked conversations online after reacting to growing public perceptions linking Fulani herdsmen to insecurity in parts of Nigeria.
In a video that has since gone viral, the young man argued that “real and original Fulani men” do not move around with assault rifles while grazing cattle in the bush, insisting that traditional herders only carry basic tools used for farming and survival.
According to him, claims that Fulani herdsmen commonly carry AK-47 rifles are misleading and unfair to the community.
“One thing people have forgotten is that a real Fulani man — a real Nigerian Fulani man — will never be seen carrying an AK-47 inside the bush,” he said.
“The only things you’ll normally see with him are a stick and a cutlass.”
He explained that the cutlass is mainly used for survival purposes, such as clearing bushes and protecting cattle from possible attacks by wild animals during grazing.
“We use the cutlass to clear trees and survive with our cows because there are wild animals that can attack or kill them while grazing. Without it, it becomes difficult to protect the cattle,” he added.
The man further argued that anyone found carrying an assault rifle in the bush should not automatically be identified as a Fulani herdsman.
“So, if you see anyone with an AK-47 in the bush, he is not a Fulani man. Please stop calling such people Fulani herdsmen. Just call them terrorists. Simple,” he stated.
The video has since generated mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians debating issues surrounding insecurity, herdsmen attacks, and ethnic profiling.
