Security operatives in Benue State have arrested seven suspects linked to the recent abduction incident in Otukpo, marking a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.
The attack occurred when gunmen intercepted a commercial bus operated by Benue Links Limited, robbing passengers before taking several of them into the bush.
While initial reports suggested up to 17 victims were abducted, the police confirmed that 14 people were taken, with at least one person managing to escape during the incident.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, the arrests were made through a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving multiple security agencies.
“Further intelligence gathered… led to the arrest of seven suspects, who are currently in police custody,” the statement noted.
Security operatives have also launched search-and-rescue missions in surrounding areas, including Amla Forest, leading to the rescue of some victims who are now receiving medical care.
Authorities, however, clarified circulating claims that the victims were part of a convoy of students heading for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), stating that they were regular passengers on a Makurdi-bound bus.
Despite this, reports suggest that some of the victims may have been travelling for the examination, which has recently faced criticism over logistical challenges and distant exam centre allocations.
Meanwhile, investigations have also turned toward the bus driver, who is currently under interrogation for allegedly violating safety protocols by travelling at night and picking up passengers outside approved procedures.
The Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, assured residents that operations are ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and restore calm in the area.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of travellers across Nigeria, especially during peak travel periods, as citizens call for stronger security measures nationwide.
