A Nigerian woman has sparked conversation on social media after criticizing what she described as a lack of depth in conversations during the early stages of dating.

Sharing her thoughts online, the lady expressed frustration with the type of questions she often receives from men. According to her, many men tend to focus on trivial topics instead of engaging in more meaningful discussions.

She cited examples of questions such as “What’s your favourite colour?” or “What do your exes do?” as the kind of conversations she finds uninteresting.

“Men in Nigeria don’t know how to hold an intellectual conversation,” she said.

Seeking a deeper mental connection

The woman explained that she identifies as sapiosexual, a term used to describe someone who is primarily attracted to intelligence. Because of this, she said she prefers conversations that challenge her intellectually rather than surface-level topics.

“I don’t need that. I’m sapiosexual—challenge me,” she added.

According to her, mental compatibility is just as important as physical or emotional attraction, especially when getting to know someone for the first time. She believes thoughtful discussions help people understand each other better and build stronger connections.

Mixed reactions online

Her statement quickly sparked debate across social media. Some users agreed with her, saying many people struggle to hold meaningful conversations while dating.

Others, however, defended casual questions, arguing that simple topics are often used to break the ice and gradually build comfort between two people.

The discussion has also highlighted changing expectations in Nigeria’s dating culture, where many singles now place increasing value on intelligence, depth, and stimulating conversation when choosing a partner.
