Kidnap Survivor Recounts Weeks of Hunger, Thirst and Hardship in Bandits’ Camp
A survivor of kidnapping and banditry has shared a chilling account of the harsh conditions he endured while being held captive, revealing how hunger, thirst, and uncertainty became part of daily life during his ordeal.
According to the survivor, he was abducted alongside 10 other people and forced to embark on a long trek into the forest immediately after their capture.
Gruelling Journey Into the Forest
He recalled that the journey to the bandits’ hideout was exhausting, with little access to food or water. Along the way, the captives were reportedly ordered to harvest food from nearby farms to survive.
The victims were made to dig up yams and gather maize, which the abductors cooked over open fires before sharing small portions among them.
Upon reaching the camp, conditions reportedly became even more difficult.
Surviving on Barely Enough Food
The survivor said some of the kidnappers later brought raw rice, which was cooked without oil, seasoning, or any form of accompaniment. The meal was reportedly poured onto a nylon sheet and shared among the captives.
According to him, the food was never enough, leaving many of them constantly hungry and physically drained.
He described the experience as one that pushed him to his limits, both emotionally and physically.
Hunger and Thirst Become Daily Struggles
After spending 22 days in captivity, the survivor said he was moved to another group of abductors, where food remained scarce.
Meals reportedly consisted mainly of ground guinea corn prepared by an errand boy. Sometimes salt was added, while at other times it was served plain.
He explained that food was often available only once or twice a day, while water was rationed among several captives.
In some cases, a single litre of water had to be shared by multiple people. The only time they were allowed to drink more freely, he said, was during long treks through the forest.
‘I Still Don’t Know How I Survived’
Reflecting on the experience, the survivor said he still struggles to comprehend how he managed to endure weeks of hunger, dehydration, and uncertainty.
He expressed gratitude to God for preserving his life and also thanked his mother, whose efforts and sacrifices, he said, played a vital role in securing his release.
His testimony has reignited concerns about the harsh realities faced by kidnapping victims across the country and renewed calls for stronger action against insecurity and banditry.
