Mayorkun’s Mother Reveals How a Simple Instagram Cover Changed the Singer’s Life Forever
The mother of popular Nigerian singer Mayorkun has shared the inspiring story of how a simple cover video posted on social media became the turning point in her son’s music career.
Speaking during an appearance on the Talk with B podcast, she recalled how neither she nor other members of the family anticipated the life-changing events that would follow after Mayorkun recorded a cover of a song by Davido and shared it online.
According to her, the moment seemed ordinary at the time.
“There is nothing God cannot do. We weren’t expecting it,” she said.
“He had gone to visit his cousin in Lekki, and while he was there, he entered the music room, played Davido’s song and decided to record a cover. He posted it online, and before we knew it, it had gone viral.”
She explained that Mayorkun recorded a cover of Davido’s hit song Money and uploaded it to Instagram, unaware that it would eventually catch the attention of the Afrobeats superstar himself.
Family Initially Thought It Was a Scam
The singer’s mother revealed that when Davido first reached out to Mayorkun, the family struggled to believe it was really him.
According to her, they were initially suspicious and wondered whether someone was impersonating the music star.
“At first, everyone was asking, ‘Is it really him or not?’ But the moment they recognised his voice, excitement took over,” she recalled.
She added that Davido praised the cover and immediately showed interest in the young singer.
“He told Mayorkun that he liked the song and even asked for his measurements. Before we knew it, he sent him a whole box filled with gifts.”
The Birth of ‘Eleko’
Shortly after their first interaction, Davido invited Mayorkun to work with him in the studio, a move that would eventually lead to the release of Eleko — the breakout hit that introduced Mayorkun to millions of music lovers.
The song became an instant success and marked the beginning of his rise to stardom.
Reflecting on the period, Mayorkun’s mother described how dramatically their lives changed after the release of the hit record.
“So many things changed almost overnight,” she said.
She also revealed that people in their Ajah neighbourhood became so familiar with the song that they jokingly nicknamed the family “Oriyami Eleko.”
