The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is gearing up for a powerful showing in the 2027 general elections, with strong encouragement from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Wike said the party’s National Convention will go on as planned, despite internal disputes and legal challenges that have trended in recent weeks.
Speaking on Friday after inspecting the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja — the venue for the long‑awaited convention — Wike expressed confidence that the PDP will demonstrate its strength across the nation.
“The convention will proceed as scheduled,” Wike declared, dismissing a court appeal by a factional group as having no influence on the party’s plans. He emphasised that reconciliation with aggrieved members is ongoing and will continue even after the convention concludes.
Unity and Reconciliation in Focus
Wike was joined by key party leaders including the Chairman of the National Convention Planning Committee, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu; PDP Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa; Chairman of the National Caretaker Working Committee Mohammed Abdulrahman; and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu. Several elders and former office holders were also present during the inspection.
Addressing speculation about internal divisions, Wike characterised the PDP as a broad and inclusive party, comparing it to a wide umbrella that must accommodate differing views. He stressed that disagreements are inevitable in a large political party and called for focus on the party’s collective goals rather than differences.
“There will always be a few who are not happy. We have agreed to sit down with them, understand their concerns, and see how we can accommodate them. What is most important is the overall interest of the party,” Wike said.
Zoning and Preparedness
On organisational matters, Wike confirmed that key party positions have been zoned across regions — with the presidency zoned to the South and the chairmanship slot zoned to the North — a move he believes will promote consensus and smooth proceedings.
Wike also spoke about logistics, stating that preparatory work for the convention is nearly complete. He said seating arrangements for delegates were finalised and VIP areas prepared, with expectations that approximately 2,500 delegates will attend the event.
The PDP National Convention is scheduled to hold on Sunday, March 29 and Monday, March 30, 2026, as party leaders look to unify and position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
