Social media commentator Honour Oriretan has criticised comedian Mark Angel over his recent wedding, describing the timing of the celebration as insensitive amid growing concerns over insecurity in Nigeria.
Oriretan made the remarks in a social media post, linking the comedian’s marriage to the ongoing abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
Criticism over wedding timing
According to the commentator, holding a wedding celebration while many families are dealing with the trauma of kidnappings and insecurity reflects a lack of empathy for those affected.
He argued that public figures should be conscious of the national mood and consider the broader circumstances facing the country before organizing major celebrations.
“Mark Angel marrying at this time the country is bleeding is unwise. A proof of ‘I don’t care’ attitude, lack of empathy,” Oriretan wrote.
He further suggested that some of the abducted children and teachers could be admirers of the comedian, making the timing of the event even more inappropriate in his view.
“Those kids, teachers kidnapped in Oyo State are probably his fans, but thinking marrying now is the best way to show them support is more unwise,” he added.
Comments on age difference
Beyond his criticism of the wedding’s timing, Oriretan also questioned the reported age gap between the comedian and his bride.
In the post, he argued that Mark Angel should have married someone closer to his age rather than a younger partner.
“Most unwise marrying a girl probably in her early 20s instead of from his age. THIS SURE A MISPLACED PRIORITY,” he wrote.
Call for apology
The commentator concluded his remarks with a controversial demand, urging the comedian to apologise and reconsider the wedding as a gesture of solidarity with the kidnapped victims and their families.
“MY JUDGEMENT: Mark Angel has 48hrs to apologize, declare this wedding invalid to show solidarity with those kids, teachers suffering in the bush and redo fresh wedding after their release. Act fast. Y’all be wise. Don’t be unwise,” he stated.
The comments have since generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users agreeing that public figures should be sensitive to national tragedies, while others argued that personal milestones should not necessarily be postponed because of broader societal challenges.
