A Nigerian man has shared the heartbreaking story of how he lost a close friend after what he described as a series of medical challenges and inadequate healthcare facilities, sparking conversations about the state of emergency healthcare in the country.

The man, identified on X as @silverpennydr, recounted the tragic incident in a post that has since attracted widespread attention and sympathy online.

Friend Complained of Chest Pain

According to him, the ordeal began when his friend contacted him complaining of severe chest pain and excessive sweating—symptoms commonly associated with serious cardiac emergencies.

Concerned about his condition, those around him reportedly rushed him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

However, upon arrival, they allegedly discovered that the facility did not have an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine, a critical piece of equipment used to assess heart function and diagnose potential cardiac problems.

As a result, he was quickly transferred to another hospital where an ECG test was eventually carried out.

Race Against Time

The man further explained that after the test, he requested that aspirin be administered immediately while plans were being made to transfer his friend to a teaching hospital for more advanced treatment.

Sadly, he claimed the medication was unavailable at the facility.

His friend was subsequently taken to a state teaching hospital, where aspirin was finally administered.

Despite the intervention, another major challenge reportedly emerged.

According to the grieving friend, the teaching hospital did not have a functional cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab), a specialized facility often used in the diagnosis and treatment of severe heart conditions, including heart attacks.

Tragic Outcome

With limited treatment options available, arrangements were reportedly made to transfer the patient to Lagos for further medical care.

Unfortunately, the situation took a devastating turn.

The man revealed that his friend passed away approximately three hours into the journey before he could receive the specialized treatment he needed.

The loss was particularly painful as the two had already made plans to reunite in the Netherlands next month.

Emotional Reaction

Expressing his grief and frustration, the bereaved man questioned the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system and the apparent lack of critical medical infrastructure.

“Nigeria really did me dirty today. How can an entire state not have a functioning cath lab? How?

I’m so broken right now,” he wrote.

His post has since generated emotional reactions from many Nigerians, with several social media users sharing similar experiences and calling for greater investment in healthcare infrastructure, emergency response systems, and life-saving medical equipment across the country.

The incident has also reignited discussions about access to quality healthcare and the challenges many Nigerians face during medical emergencies.
