A Lagos-based woman has shared details of an unusual conversation she had with an elderly man who controversially described modern dating as “consented rape.”

The discussion reportedly took place last week on Lagos Island and has since drawn attention for the man’s unconventional views on relationships, consent, and promises of marriage.

According to the woman, the man — who she described as a financial accountant that also drives for additional income — explained his theory over the course of several days. He framed dating as a transactional arrangement in which one person allegedly benefits from another’s future under the promise of marriage.

A Controversial Perspective

“He said dating is consented rape,” the woman recounted. “He explained that in the past, when there were no proper records, people could commit rape and the victim couldn’t report it because of stigma. Now, someone can say, ‘I want to marry you. I see a future with you,’ and start taking the benefits of that promised future today.”

To illustrate his point, the man reportedly used a car-sale analogy. According to the woman, he described a scenario in which someone sells a car to one buyer for ₦3 million while simultaneously promising it to another buyer.

“The lesson, he said, is that in dating, some people promise a future commitment but begin enjoying the benefits in the present without intending to fulfill that promise later,” she explained.

Legal Implications and Accountability

The woman added that the man also spoke about potential legal consequences tied to false promises of marriage.

“He mentioned that promises of marriage can have legal implications and that someone could take legal action if they believe they were misled into giving benefits based on a commitment that was never intended to be kept,” she said.

Although she acknowledged that his views were controversial, the woman noted that the conversation gave her a different perspective on trust, accountability, and expectations in modern relationships.
