A tragic incident has hit the Nigerian military as a commanding officer and six other soldiers lost their lives during operations in Monguno, Borno State, following a deadly encounter with terrorists.
The troops were part of the Joint Task Force under Operation HADIN KAI when they came under attack on April 12, 2026, at a location identified as Charlie 13 in Monguno.
Fierce Battle With Terrorists
According to military sources, soldiers from Sector 3 engaged the attackers in a heavy gunfight, successfully forcing them to retreat and regaining control of the area.
Despite the successful repelling of the attack, the situation took a tragic turn shortly after.
IED Blast Claims Senior Officer
The commanding officer, who had reportedly moved closer to the frontline to assess the situation and support his men, was killed when his vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Six other personnel also died in the explosion.
Military Reacts
The Nigerian Army described the late officer’s action as a true reflection of courage and leadership, noting that he led from the front even in dangerous conditions.
“His sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the nation,” the statement read.
Troops Still in Control
Despite the loss, the military confirmed that operations in the area remain under control as efforts continue to secure the region and prevent further attacks.
The incident adds to the growing list of casualties in the ongoing fight against insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East.
