Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chieftain of the Babachir Lawal has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of allegedly pushing Nigeria toward a one-party system.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Lawal claimed that the current government would struggle to win a free and fair election, insisting that its survival depends on weakening opposition parties.
“They want a one-party system… this government cannot go to a free and fair election because they will lose woefully,” he said.
He also alleged that opposition parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are already positioning themselves to challenge the ruling party ahead of 2027, despite what he described as attempts to frustrate their activities.
According to him, the ADC remains confident in its internal strength and believes it has solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, but its immediate priority is to remove the APC from power.
Lawal further insisted that the party would participate in the 2027 elections regardless of the stance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adding that legal interpretations—not INEC decisions—will determine their participation.
His comments have added fresh tension to Nigeria’s already heated political space as conversations around 2027 continue to intensify.
