A woman has taken to social media to express her frustration over her elder brother’s marriage, claiming that her sister-in-law’s behaviour during family gatherings has become a recurring source of tension and disappointment among relatives.
The woman shared her experience while reflecting on a family burial ceremony held in their hometown last December, where relatives travelled from different locations to support the bereaved family and assist with preparations.
Absence from family activities sparks concerns
According to her account, her sister-in-law has developed a reputation for avoiding household responsibilities and communal activities whenever the extended family gathers for important events.
She said the issue became particularly noticeable during the burial ceremony, where family members were expected to work together to host guests and manage the numerous tasks associated with the occasion.
The woman alleged that shortly after arriving for the event, her brother’s wife isolated herself from the rest of the family and remained upstairs throughout most of the proceedings.
“As soon as they arrived, she went straight to her room. While everyone was busy downstairs, she was upstairs laughing, watching movies and enjoying herself,” she wrote.
According to her, the situation created frustration among some family members who felt the workload was not being shared equally.
Brother’s past advice raises questions
The woman also revealed that what troubled her most was the contrast between her brother’s current marriage and the values he once encouraged his sisters to uphold.
She recalled that while growing up, her brother frequently emphasised the importance of hard work, responsibility and diligence, often suggesting that such qualities were essential for a successful marriage.
“He used to lecture us that no man would marry a lazy woman. That’s why I’m confused about how he chose someone who seems to live by the opposite of what he preached,” she said.

Her story has since sparked discussion online, with many Nigerians offering differing opinions on the responsibilities of married women during extended family events.
While some argued that participation in family activities is a sign of respect, support and togetherness, others maintained that spouses should not be automatically expected to take on domestic duties simply because they are attending a family gathering.
