Liverpool have opened discussions with Andoni Iraola over the possibility of becoming the club’s next head coach following the departure of Arne Slot.

The Reds are moving swiftly to identify a successor after parting ways with Slot just one year after he led the club to Premier League glory.

According to reports, Iraola has emerged as Liverpool’s leading candidate, with formal negotiations already underway as the club looks to begin a new chapter ahead of the 2026–27 campaign.

Liverpool begin managerial search

The recruitment process is being overseen by sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously worked closely with Iraola during his time at Bournemouth before making the move to Anfield.

Liverpool’s hierarchy are believed to be prioritising a manager whose football philosophy aligns with the club’s long-term vision and playing identity.

While there is a desire to appoint a new head coach as soon as possible, club officials are also determined to conduct a thorough process before making a final decision.

Reports suggest that no approaches have yet been made to potential coaching staff members, with those discussions expected to take place only if negotiations with Iraola advance significantly.

Successful Bournemouth spell strengthens case

Iraola’s reputation has continued to grow following an impressive spell at AFC Bournemouth, where he transformed the Cherries into one of the Premier League’s most competitive sides.

The south coast club enjoyed an outstanding second half of the 2025–26 season, putting together an 18-match unbeaten run that helped secure a sixth-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Bournemouth also finished just three points behind Liverpool in the league table, further underlining the remarkable progress made under the Spaniard’s leadership.

Highly regarded across English football

The 44-year-old coach is widely respected for his energetic, high-pressing style of play, tactical adaptability, and ability to improve players and maximise squad performance.

Those qualities have made him one of the most sought-after managers in English football and a strong contender to take charge at Anfield.

Liverpool are expected to continue talks with Iraola in the coming days as they aim to finalise their managerial appointment before the start of pre-season preparations.

With the club eager to build on recent success and remain competitive at the highest level, the decision over who succeeds Slot is likely to be one of the most important moves of the summer.
