Millwall forward Femi Azeez has taken a significant step towards committing his international future to Nigeria by beginning the process of obtaining a Nigerian passport.
The 24-year-old winger, who impressed during the Super Eagles’ successful Unity Cup campaign, is understood to be completing the necessary documentation that would make him eligible for competitive international fixtures ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September.
Passport application underway
Born in London to a Nigerian father, Azeez qualifies to represent Nigeria while also being eligible for England and Spain.
However, the attacker appears increasingly inclined towards the Super Eagles and has started the formal process of securing a Nigerian passport. Once cleared and selected for a competitive fixture, Azeez would become officially tied to Nigeria at senior level, ending any possibility of representing either England or Spain in the future.
Unity Cup displays strengthen his case
Azeez boosted his standing within the national team setup during the recent Unity Cup in London, where he emerged as one of Nigeria’s most impressive performers.
The former Reading winger contributed to three goals during the tournament, a tally matched only by captain and striker Terem Moffi. His pace, creativity and attacking threat proved crucial as the Super Eagles successfully defended their Unity Cup crown.
Those performances have significantly enhanced his chances of becoming a regular part of Eric Chelle’s plans moving forward.
AFCON qualifiers could seal his commitment
Following his standout displays at the Unity Cup, Azeez was reportedly under consideration for Nigeria’s recent friendly matches against Poland and Portugal.
However, the Nigeria Football Federation later revealed that Millwall declined to release the winger after he was not included in the original squad list for the international window.
With the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign set to begin in September, the upcoming fixtures could provide Azeez with his first opportunity to feature in a competitive match for Nigeria.
Should he make an appearance, the talented attacker would officially commit his international future to the Super Eagles, strengthening Nigeria’s attacking options as the team continues to build under Eric Chelle.
