The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation into reports of civilian casualties following airstrikes around Jilli Market, near Fuchimiram village in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.
Investigation Underway
In an official statement, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the Air Force is treating the allegations with “utmost seriousness and empathy.”
He disclosed that the Chief of the Air Staff has ordered the immediate deployment of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell (CHAI-Cell) to conduct a fact-finding mission at the scene.
“The NAF remains firmly committed to professionalism, accountability, and transparency in the conduct of its missions,” the statement noted.
Details of the Airstrike
Earlier, the NAF confirmed carrying out mop-up airstrikes in the Jilli axis, targeting suspected insurgents.
According to the Air Force, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to track and neutralize terrorist elements responsible for recent attacks on security forces, particularly those attempting to regroup within the region.
However, the military did not initially confirm whether civilian casualties were recorded.
Reports from the Ground
Local sources and residents have since reported that the incident occurred while traders were carrying out their normal activities at the market.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that several people were feared killed while others sustained injuries, with many victims reportedly taken to nearby medical facilities.
At the Geidam Specialist Hospital, the Accident and Emergency unit has reportedly been overwhelmed, as injured persons continue to receive urgent treatment.
What Led to the Incident
According to local accounts, a military fighter jet was allegedly tracking suspected Boko Haram insurgents believed to have entered the area to collect levies from residents before the strike occurred.
