Then VAR stepped in.
The referee was sent to the screen. Replays showed a West Ham player’s arm on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Another player pulled his shirt. After a long review, the goal was disallowed. Arsenal won 1-0. 🏆
But Schmeichel is not buying it. He said the decision was “crazy” and “so wrong on so many levels.” Then he dropped a heavy one.
“What really makes me angry is that Arsenal would never be top of the league if that’s a free-kick. That’s how they’ve scored so many goals — by blocking people, holding people, doing all kinds of things.” 🗣️
He also questioned why VAR took so long. “It takes five minutes. That in itself puts so much doubt into the decision that it cannot be a free-kick.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta disagreed. He praised the officials for being brave enough to make the right call. “When you see the picture, there is no question,” Arteta said. 💪
The win moved Arsenal five points clear of Manchester City. The title is getting closer. But the debate over VAR is far from over. 🍿
