Former Arsenal academy goalkeeper Ovie Ejeheri has linked up with the Super Eagles camp ahead of Nigeria’s Unity Cup clash against Zimbabwe in London.
The 22-year-old, who currently plays for FC Midtjylland, took part in Saturday’s training session at Cray Valley Paper Mills ground on Middle Park Avenue, as head coach Eric Chelle continues to assess his squad ahead of the tournament opener.
Ejeheri, who remains eligible to represent Nigeria, England, and Uganda at international level, expressed his delight at finally joining the national team setup.
“It was really exciting and I enjoyed it. It’s been a long time coming, so I’m really proud of this moment,” he said.
He added that while training carried little pressure, the real test would come in competitive matches.
“I don’t think there’s any pressure in training. Maybe if I was to play a game I’d feel some sort of pressure, but even now football is football—you’ve got to enjoy it,” he said.
The goalkeeper described his invitation as a major milestone in his career, noting that it was an experience he would always remember.
“It’s a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life because this is the first time. You always remember the first time of anything,” he added.
Ejeheri also spoke about reuniting with former Arsenal academy teammate Arthur Okonkwo in camp.
“Once you leave Arsenal, it is good to see one of the boys again. It’s like seeing an old friend you haven’t seen in a while,” he said.
On his playing style, the young goalkeeper expressed confidence that he can adapt to Chelle’s tactical demands.
“Being a good goalkeeper in general, and playing in the role the coach wants—with a high defensive line—I feel I can do that,” he explained.
He also shared his surprise at Chelle’s personality after their first interaction.
“He had a good chat with me while I was training. He’s quite funny. I wasn’t expecting it, so it was a nice surprise,” he said.
The Super Eagles camp has now increased to 17 players following the arrival of Francis Uzoho and other invitees ahead of Tuesday’s Unity Cup fixture against Zimbabwe.
