Nigerian Man Heartbroken After Discovering Aunt He Supported for Two Years Is Wealthy
A Nigerian man has shared his disappointment after discovering that an aunt he had been financially supporting for two years was far wealthier than she had led him to believe.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), user @Mrbachelor revealed that he faithfully sent his aunt ₦30,000 every month from his salary after she told him she was struggling to survive in the village.
According to him, his aunt had repeatedly complained about her leaking roof and a provision shop that was on the verge of collapse. Moved by her situation, he decided to help despite facing financial difficulties himself.
The man said he often survived on garri and groundnuts just to ensure his aunt had enough money to eat and take care of herself.
However, everything changed in December 2025 when he travelled to his hometown for a family reunion.
Carrying a half bag of rice he had purchased for her, he made his way to her street, expecting to find the same dilapidated house she had always described during their conversations.
Instead, he was stunned to find a newly built four-bedroom duplex complete with interlocking paving stones and a borehole.
Confused, he asked neighbours about the property and was shocked to learn that the house belonged to his aunt. He was also informed that she had recently purchased two buses for a thriving transport business.
Still trying to process the revelation, he received a phone call from his aunt.
According to him, she continued to speak as though she was living in hardship.
“My son,” she said in a pitiful voice, “have you sent this month’s money? I have not drank water since yesterday.”
The discovery left the man heartbroken, especially after the sacrifices he had made over the past two years to support someone he believed was struggling financially.
