“I Chose Me”: South African Woman Celebrates One Year After Removing Fallopian Tubes to Live Child-Free

A 34-year-old South African woman, Vhahangwele Rashaka, has sparked widespread reactions online after revealing that she underwent surgery to remove her fallopian tubes as part of her decision to live a child-free life.

Rashaka, a medical officer, shared her story in a Facebook post on Saturday, June 13, reflecting on the life-changing procedure and the personal fulfillment she says it has brought her.

According to her, she is approaching the one-year anniversary of the surgery and remains confident that it was the right decision for her.

“I Am Living My Wildest Dreams”

In her post, Rashaka explained that she has never wanted children and feels empowered by the freedom to make decisions about her own future.

“I will be celebrating one year after getting my fallopian tubes surgically removed (salpingectomy). I am living my wildest dreams. I am living the life I definitely imagined when I was an 18-year-old girl,” she wrote.

The procedure, known as a salpingectomy, involves the surgical removal of the fallopian tubes and is considered a permanent form of contraception.

Choosing Her Own Path

Reflecting on her journey, Rashaka said she sees herself as someone fortunate enough to make choices based on her own desires rather than societal expectations.

“I am definitely my ancestors’ wildest dreams, a lady with options and able to choose for herself, not forced by conditions, culture or pressure but able to choose,” she stated.

She added that while her decision may not align with traditional expectations, prioritizing her own happiness has been one of her proudest achievements.

Rashaka acknowledged that choosing a child-free lifestyle is often met with criticism, but insisted that her happiness remains her priority.

“This is important because I chose what is frowned upon most of the time. I chose me and me alone. I became selfish for my happiness and that’s one great accomplishment,” she wrote.

Her post has since generated mixed reactions online, with some praising her for exercising personal choice over her reproductive future, while others debated the broader social and cultural implications of living child-free.
