Erling Haaland delivered another match-winning performance as Norway secured their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 32 with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Senegal in New Jersey.
The Manchester City striker scored twice in the second half, helping Norway maintain their perfect start to the tournament and become the latest nation to book a spot in the knockout stages. The result sees the Scandinavians move to six points from two matches, joining France in advancing from Group I.
For Senegal, the defeat leaves qualification hanging in the balance, with victory over Iraq now essential in their final group game.
Norway Rewarded for Dominant Start
Norway looked the more dangerous side from the opening whistle and were eventually rewarded for their persistence late in the first half.
Substitute Marcus Pedersen capitalized on a costly mistake by Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly, pouncing on a poor clearance before firing home to give Norway a deserved lead.
The momentum carried into the second half, with captain Martin Ødegaard pulling the strings from midfield and dictating the tempo of the game.
Just three minutes after the restart, Ødegaard threaded a perfectly weighted pass through Senegal’s defense, releasing Haaland, who calmly raced through on goal before slotting past the goalkeeper to double Norway’s advantage.
The strike also saw Haaland become Norway’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer.
Haaland Continues Red-Hot Form
Senegal refused to go down without a fight and pulled one back through Ismaïla Sarr, whose composed finish reignited hopes of a comeback.
However, Haaland quickly restored Norway’s two-goal cushion.
The prolific forward met a dangerous delivery with a superb side-footed volley that clipped the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
The goal was Haaland’s fourth of the tournament in just two appearances, further strengthening his status as one of the competition’s standout performers.
Late Senegal Fightback Falls Short
Senegal mounted a late push in search of a result, and Sarr grabbed his second goal deep into stoppage time to make for a tense finale.
The Crystal Palace winger nearly completed a remarkable comeback moments later, but his close-range header drifted over the crossbar, allowing Norway to hold on for all three points.

Despite a nervy finish, Norway were deserved winners and have now secured qualification for the knockout stages with one group match remaining.
Haaland’s latest heroics further highlighted his importance to the national team, with the 25-year-old extending his scoring streak to 12 consecutive competitive matches for Norway.
Norway will now face France in their final Group I fixture, with top spot in the group on the line. Both sides have already secured progression to the next round.
