Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has named his all-time Super Eagles best XI.
And Nigerians are not happy. The 24-year-old recently switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria. He picked a squad dominated by players from the last 15 years — the generation he grew up watching.
He left out Nwankwo Kanu, Rashidi Yekini, and Daniel Amokachi. Three of Nigeria’s greatest forwards ever. Instead, he picked Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Victor Moses in attack.
In midfield, he chose Wilfred Ndidi and John Obi Mikel. He left out Sunday Oliseh.
He picked Jay-Jay Okocha as his attacking midfielder that one, nobody is arguing. In goal, Vincent Enyeama. No debate there. In defence, Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Elderson Echiéjilé.
The internet is on fire. One person wrote: “No Kanu? No Yekini? This list is a joke.” Another said: “He picked players from his era.
That is fair. He didn’t watch the legends live.” Someone else added: “Okocha and Enyeama deserve their spots. But leaving out Kanu is criminal.” A different voice said: “It’s his opinion. Everyone has a right to their own list.”
