Ghana’s President, John Mahama, has emphasized the critical importance of Nigeria’s stability to the wider West African region, stating that developments in Nigeria have direct effects on neighbouring countries.
Speaking on regional security and economic relations, Mahama explained that Nigeria’s large population and influence make its progress or challenges felt across the entire sub-region.
He noted that when Nigeria is stable and prosperous, it positively impacts surrounding nations, while instability could create ripple effects, including migration pressure on smaller countries like Ghana.
According to him, the interconnected nature of West African countries means Nigeria’s situation is not just a domestic concern but a regional one.
“Nigeria is of key security interest to us. If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well… when you have about 250 million cousins, you would want them to do well so that people don’t drift into smaller countries like Ghana. So every day I wake up and pray: God, let Nigeria get their act together,” he said.
His remarks have sparked conversations online about Nigeria’s regional influence and its role in shaping West Africa’s economic and security landscape.
“We Ghanaians Pray Every Day for Nigeria to Do Well So They Don’t End Up Running to a Small Country Like Ghana”
