Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson has been getting serious heat online. She launched a period care kit for young girls called “Girls Tag.” The price is ₦25,000. Many Nigerians are angry. They say it is too expensive. The country’s minimum wage is ₦70,000. That means this kit costs more than a third of what many workers earn in a month.
But now, some people are defending Mercy Johnson. One person wrote that it is a starter kit, not something you buy every month. You buy it once to introduce your daughter to puberty. After that, you can buy normal pads that are cheaper.
Another person said Mercy Johnson knows her customers. She is not forcing anyone to buy. If you cannot afford it, buy the normal pads that cost ₦2,000. There is no problem.
A different voice added that people are acting like she is the only one selling pads. Go to any shop, you will see pads for small money. If her own is too expensive, leave it and buy another one. Someone else wrote that for a young girl seeing her period for the first time, having a nice kit with everything she needs can make her feel special. That is what this kit is for.
Another person simply said if the kit is expensive for you, don’t buy it. Let those who can afford it buy it. Why are we crying?
The debate is now hot. One side says Mercy Johnson is out of touch with poor Nigerians. The other side says she is running a business, not a charity.
